This proposal investigates what happens to the memory of marginalized communities that were once displaced and attempts to answer how one can memorialize that community while providing and serving the greater good. It calls for the demolition of the abandoned Atlanta civic center, and in its place, a public housing development built that emphasizes identity, ownership, and a self-sustaining community of residents, a reclamation of the original site
20TH CENTURY UTOPIAS AND THEIR ORIGINS
History of Urban Planning
This paper aims to identify and explore three prominent plans during the 20th century: Sir Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City and Le Corbusier’s Radiant City. Before exploring these, an introduction for the inspiration laid the groundwork for these plans, which introduces utopian socialists such as Owen, Fourier, and Saint-Simon. They created utopias for the betterment of society.
